Pho is the traditional Vietnamese noodle soup made with nice fragrant herbs, fresh vegetable produce, sliced meat, and rice noodles served in a rich, flavourful bone broth that is simply delicious. It is recognised as the national dish of Vietnam but is now popular all around the globe. In this article, we have put together everything you need to know about Vietnamese Pho and how to make it at home with an easy-to-follow recipe.

Types of Vietnamese Pho

After Vietnam was divided in 1954, Pho moved south and assumed a new form. The outcome was that Pho Bac and Pho Nam, two distinct Pho varieties, each with a distinct regional origin.

Pho Bac

Pho Bac, a northern Vietnamese dish, is regarded as the original Pho. It is renowned for having clear, milder bone broth, wider noodles, and an abundance of green onions.

Pho Nam

Pho Nam, or southern Vietnamese Pho, is distinguished by its stronger broth and thinner noodles. In the south, meat is more prevalent in Pho, and various cow parts, such as bone marrow, tendon, and brisket, are also frequently used. Typically, bean sprouts and fresh herbs are added on top.

Recipe for cooking the best homemade Vietnamese Pho

Ingredients required

  •  1 onion, unpeeled and cut in half
  • 5 slices of fresh ginger
  • 4 pounds of beef soup bones
  • 2 ½ tablespoons fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 pods star anise
  • 4 quarts water
  • 1 ½ pound beef top sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1 package (8 ounces) of dried rice noodles
  • 1½  cup cilantro, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon green onion, chopped
  • 1 bunch of Thai basil.
  • 1 ½ cups bean sprouts
  • 1 lime, cut into 4 wedges
  • ¼ cup chile-garlic sauce (Optional)
  • ¼ cup hoisin sauce (Optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 220 degrees C.
  • Place the beef bones on a baking pan, and roast for about an hour, or until browned.
  • In the preheated oven, place the onion on a baking sheet, and roast for 45 minutes, or until tender and caramelized.
  • In a big stockpot, combine the bones, onion, ginger, salt, star anise, and fish sauce. Pour-over four quarts of water. Bring it to a boil, then turn down the heat. For six to ten hours, simmer on low. Put the strained broth in a saucepan and put it aside.
  • Soak rice noodles for an hour in a big bowl with room temperature water. After the noodles have had time to soak, place them in a big saucepan of boiling water for one minute. Let the stock shimmer before turning off the heat.
  • Distribute the noodles among the four bowls to serve; add the sirloin, cilantro, and green onion on top. Now, over the top, pour the heated broth. Stir, then wait for one to two minutes for the steak to get done and lose its pink colour. Hoisin sauce, lime wedges, chilli-garlic sauce, bean sprouts, Thai basil, and other condiments can be served on the side.
